Business Proposition

Resonetics offers a unique business proposition by combining two world class divisions (Laser Micromachining and Laser Systems) to provide a comprehensive value proposition. Customers are often posed with two options when considering using laser micromachining technology to manufacture a device or component.

  1. Outsource the manufacturing
  2. Purchase capital equipment

The customer may elect to outsource the manufacturing to a laser job shop or volume contract manufacturer. However these companies often view their manufacturing technology as proprietary because they do not wish customers to bring the technology in house. For medical device companies, this can be problematic as government regulations require manufacturing processes to be validated so it would be desirable if the exact process parameters and methodology were well-known and documented for the customer’s review.

The alternative is to purchase a piece of capital equipment. To make this decision the process needs to be developed, often with laser manufacturers, who do not have extensive application labs and may not be time sensitive to the customer’s demanding schedules. Laser manufacturers are interested in selling laser sources, not a turnkey laser system. Purchasing a laser micromachining system requires significant capital investment of hundreds of thousands of dollars with an associated lead-time.

In between these two options lies the option of outsourcing the manufacturing for a limited period of time and then bringing the technology in-house or install a system overseas as a part of an overall cost-reduction program. In such a scenario, the customer may require to work with outsource partners and then, in parallel, work with laser system integrators to “re-develop” and "re-validate" the process, lengthening the lead-time to production launch.

Resonetics offers a total business solution without any limitations since the company offers both outsourcing services and laser systems. By Resonetics offering a true full service partnership, the customer has immediately both a short term and long-term solution. Under a non-disclosure agreement, manufacturing processes and technologies can be freely exchanged, giving the customer the comfort and knowledge that the manufacturing process is under control. And should the manufacturing be transferred off-site, a custom laser system can be build and the entire original manufacturing process is transferred. The customer can rest easy, knowing the process has been fully documented and characterized.

Resonetics reviews customer's dimensioned drawing for a micromachined material, component or sub assembly.
Resonetics technical sales, application and system engineers review the drawing for technical feasibility and selection of the appropriate laser micromachining technology (excimer, diode-pumped solid state, fiber and CO2 laser.)
Under a controlled Resonetics Statement of Work document (objective, work details, key issues, deliverables) approved by both the client and Resonetics, laser-machined prototypes are delivered.
Resonetics is a one stop value proposition for the client. Resonetics offers both laser micromachining services as well as capitol equipment. The client can start with outsourcing and then at a later date, decide to bring the technology in house. Resonetics will supply the entire process and train the client on the operation and maintenance of the equipment. The client can have peace of mind that Resonetics is their short term and long term partner.

Trained Resonetics laser and application engineers visit the client's facility to repeat the factory pre-acceptance test and train up to four individuals on the operation and maintenance of the laser system.
After the installation, Resonetics provides outstanding customer service to assure the performance and functionality of the laser system. Resonetics recommends annual service contracts (performed quarterly, every six months) for regular/preventative maintenance as well as to provide additional training (if needed).
Resonetics operates 24 hour/6 days per week with three clean rooms to provide volume manufacturing (up to millions of parts per year). The corporation focuses on automating every aspect of the manufacturing process (part handling, laser and non-laser processing, inspection) to drive costs down while maintaining quality and on-target delivery.

To successfully offer this unique value proposition, Resonetics must have the outsource capacity and engineering horsepower to offer world class solutions for both outsourcing services and laser micromachining equipment.

Resonetics Laser Micromachining Division is not a traditional laser job shop consisting of a small number of laser systems and technicians. Instead the laser Micromachining Division is the largest plastic laser micromachining facility in the world, with three clean rooms and +50 laser systems. The ISO 9001:2008 & 13485:2003 company understands the regulatory requirements of the medical device industry with a Quality System adept to handle the quality system demands such as process validation and FEMA’s, under the guidance of quality and manufacturing engineers.

Resonetics Laser Systems Division has delivered hundreds of laser systems worldwide. The Laser Systems Division has also designed and manufactured all the laser systems installed in the Laser Micromachining Division. This is invaluable as Resonetics acts as its own beta site to ensure all systems modules are reliable for 24 hours per day operation. In addition, the division can leverage it extensive Engineering horsepower (the Application, System and Manufacturing Engineering staff alone is larger than most of our competitors) to ensure the application is properly developed before a system is built.

In summary, by Resonetics having two world class divisions (Laser Micromachining Division and Laser Systems Division), the company is uniquely positioned to offer the customer a comprehensive value proposition, enabling a partnership for the long term.
